James obtained a BSc in Chemistry and a doctorate in chemistry both from the University of Exeter. After his PhD he worked as a postdoctoral researcher and then as a research scientist in-house for Pilkington. James trained as a patent attorney in the intellectual property department of Pilkington. Prior to joining Script IP Ltd, he also worked as a patent attorney for 3M and in private practices in the UK.
James specialises in chemistry, materials science, surface science, polymer science, pharmaceuticals and food science.
James has over 20 years of professional experience in the field of intellectual property. He has drafted and prosecuted a large number of patent applications before the UK and European Patent Offices and in other jurisdictions and has successfully opposed many granted European patents. James has appeared in many hearings before the Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal of the EPO.
James won the Moss prize for the examinations of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys in 1998 and qualified as a Chartered and European Patent Attorney in 2002. He is a trade mark and design representative before EU IPO (the EU trade marks and designs office).
