Richard graduated from the University of Exeter in 1972 with a BSc in Engineering Science.
Richard has wide experience of both industrial patent operations and private practice. He joined the patent profession in 1972. He began his career at Haseltine, Lake and Co as a trainee patent attorney and subsequently at EMI.
He qualified as both a European and UK patent attorney in 1979 at EMI but then worked for RCA Corporation in their London Patent Operation working on television amongst other technologies. He became manager of the operation after RCA merged with GE. He later joined D Young & Co and became a Partner there. After about 12 years he joined EIP becoming a Partner until retiring to work as an independent consultant in 2014.
Richard has worked on a wide variety of subject matter. He has worked for clients on mechanical inventions, medical devices, communications systems and consumer electronics. He has particular experience in digital audio and video technologies, and, over the last six years, software. He also has experience of Registered Designs.
He drafts and prosecutes patent applications mainly in the physics, mechanical and electronic fields. Richard's clients have included major European, US and Japanese blue chip technology companies, SMEs, start ups and individual inventors. Richard has experience of the differing requirements across the complete spectrum of clients from individual inventors to international corporations.
He has experience of hearings at the EPO and the UKIPO.
